computing - be os advantages

2017 Apr 18 - later that day BeOS instance of R5.0.3 has networking thanks to red85toy who is Running BeOS 5 on vSphere 6. Follow the article for the lance driver. I made an iso image of the network driver, mounted, and installed into BeOS. This BeOS instance runs CTP with a 1.24 patch.

2017 Apr 18 A bit of now ancient history. Flies in amber. Not all the links will work as intended - we see where they park in some cases.

I still have instances of BeOS running in VMWare Fusion Version 7.1.2 (2779224) - and just to irritate anyone who wants to do the same - I do not clearly remember how I did it - I recall that the make of DVD/CD drive is significant. No network for BeOS 5Pro. I can play CIV CTP fine but not the later patch - video fail. The BeOSMax5 instance has network.

2008 Oct 06 I last updated the text of this page on 3 December 2003. A bit of history. Flies in amber.

29 August 2001 - a few days after the sale of most of Be to Palm. All that follows is still true but unfortunately most users will have to wait longer for an OS that was as compact, easy to use, and responsive as Be.

Be OS Advantages

  • A fast and easy install process.
  • A fast boot time of under 30 seconds.
  • Stable.
  • New hardware does not require subsequent re-boots or kernel rebuilding.
  • It comes with an excellent Boot Manager and co-exists with existing operating systems on the same machine.
  • It has an advanced file system that can cope with very large files.
  • it is a true multitasking OS that takes advantage of multiple CPUs offering significant performance gains over a single processor machine.
  • It has multiple desktops (workspaces) and each has it's own settings; workspace switching is fast and easy. Backgrounds, resolutions, colour depth, etc can be different for every workspace.
  • Ideal for fast program development.
  • It is a modern stable OS that outperforms MS Windows in every area. Be OS is easier to install and use than Linux and offers similar stability.

Summary

Be OS is ideal for users that want a stable fast OS that is optimized for handling multimedia files. It is a practical alternative to Windows or Linux for everyday desktop use. There are increasingly mature applications available for most tasks. Be OS is a new OS and does not yet have a full range of software.

Be OS Solutions

Be OS Problems

  • Hardware support is not yet as extensive as in other operating systems but there are frequent driver releases and updates from 3rd party developers.
  • Fewer software options compared to Windows or Linux but software is available for most computing tasks.

You said that the BeOS has 'similar stability' in regards to Linux. I strongly disagree, Linux has for years now, been much less stable than the nearly unbreakable BeOS! ... Linux is stable only when it is up and running, and it is not altered, restarted, or the like. The BeOS can handle being restarted thousands of times with no errors, it can handle running for months without errors(as Linux can do, on a bare-bones server-running system...but not everyday use). - JDG

1. Email:

Whoa! I wouldn't want to do email anywhere else! BeOS features the best and most transparent integration of email I know. I can even label my mail in different colors with the Label-Tracker add-on from BeBits.

MailDaemonReplacement handles multiple accounts, parallel send/receive, filtering (even regular expressions), offers a new BeMail and more! It's the most efficient way to deal with mail today. And [I] don't have to be afraid of viri that spread themselves to all my contacts...!

2. Print:

Support for EPSON-printers has always been very good (in fact EPSON doesn't offer support for the Stylus600 on Win2k anymore, but a driver is included), and integration of printing is better than on Windows (excellent print-preview etc.). I have yet to see a free PDF-Writer for Windows that works as good as the BeOS-version! BePDF is also available for free, and is 1/10 in size compared to AcrobatReader. Finally, the printserver is being rewritten by the OpenBeOS-developers Michael Pfeiffer and Philippe Houdin, and it looks very good already.

3. WordProcess/Spreadsheet/Present:

It's not often the case that I need more than what Gobe offers in a most productive and efficient document-creation environment. It could need an update (the 3.0-version for Windows was not quite what I expected), but it was a great and innovative office-suit. Using Gobe, I was always faster than with other office-suits and had more time (and in parts also more possibilities) to touch up the document to deliver a really creative end-result.

I still prefer it to the mammoths that are MS-Office or StarOffice (which has also more features than you can shake a stick at, but is at least more stable and *predictable* than MS-Office).

4. [Image Manipulation]

There is now a very promising image-manipulation-app called "Inferno" that's fully plugins-based and has a very extensible and intelligent extension-system, also supports partial Undo, which are just some of the highlights.

Greetings and have fun,

Gregor
